Visit to York

Wow, I knew we had been busy over the last week or so; however it wasn't until recently that I realized I hadn't updated our blog for two weeks (oops!).

On August 9 we decided to visit the city of York and its main sights. York is about 2.5 hours from our house so the kids were definitely ready to get out of the car once we arrived. Unfortunately it was raining when we arrived so while it was nice to stand up, it was not pleasant walking around the town in the rain attempting to dodge all of the raindrops. To say the least, we failed doing that miserably. ;o) While there are many things to see and do in York, the two main things we wanted to see for the day was York Minster and Clifford's Tower. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and it was built in the shape of a cross. There was a wedding taking place in the Minster when we arrived so the children enjoyed watching the bride and groom walk down the aisle after their ceremony.





Very close to York Minster is St. Mary's Abbey. The ruins are of what was one of the most important monasteries in Yorkshire.

With it still raining when we left York Minster, we decided to just drive by Clifford's Tower rather than stopping to wander around it. The site of Clifford's Tower was used by the Romans as a cemetery.
